Complete Ban of Abortion in Poland by the right wing government and Catholic Church

Last week, Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal (Supreme Court / Trybunal Konstytucyjny) ruled that abortions in cases of fetal defects are unconstitutional.

The Strictest Abortion Laws in Europe

Poland’s abortion laws are among the strictest in Europe – the procedure is only legal in cases of rape or incest, or if the mother’s life is at risk, or if the fetus is seriously compromised. And since almost all legal abortions in Poland are performed on the grounds of fetal defects this new ruling effectively bans pregnancy terminations.

Attack on human rights by the right-wing PiS government & Catholic Church

Poland’s abortion ban is part of a broader attack on women and human rights by the right-wing PiS government. Another bill up for debate would criminalize “the promotion of underage sex”, which means the ban of sex education in schools. It states that people who encourage anyone under the age of 18 to have sex could face a maximum three years in prison.

These laws are imposed on Polish women by the Catholic Church, with bishops and catholic groups extending their influence and pressuring the government. The Church is run by an organized cabal of men working together with the government it helped to install, and is composed disproportionately by men. They feel empowered to impose their archaic moral code of conduct – dating back to the medieval crusades – on the rest of the society.

Protests All Over Poland

Although public gatherings are currently limited in Poland due to Covid-19, Polish feminists and Polish human rights organizations are fighting back. Since the abortion ban, thousands of women have taken to the streets, and protested against the tightening of the abortion law.  Marching through the streets of Polish cities and towns, women speak out the truth that the political elites, directed by the Church, are introducing laws, mimicking past totalitarian facist and communist regimes, to further subjugate women to the rule of omnipresent patriarchal order which continues to show no respect for women’s rights.

In 2019 there were 1100 abortion procedures performed in Poland, 1074 of them resulted from the results of prenatal tests or other medical indications, which indicated a high probability of a severe and irreversible impairment of the fetus or an incurable life-threatening disease. In practice, the decision of the Constitutional Tribunal means an almost complete ban on abortion in Poland.
