Madeleine teaches at Columbia University and draws inspiration from her experiences growing up in Sydney, spending a decade in the US, and currently living in Berlin.
Set in 2018, “Elegy, Southwest” takes readers on a journey along the route of the Colorado River, weaving together environment themes and human experience. Madeleine shares insights into her process, citing influences from Southern California and the narratives that the landscape tells, as well as the literary voices of the Southwest, including Mike Davis.
While fully fictional, Madeleine draws upon her note-taking and observations while traveling through Arizona and Nevada.
