La Candelaria

Art communicates what is inside of you, your mind, your heart, your soul. Sometimes when you have all those voices in your head, that's when the beautiful mess starts.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: La Candelaria

CREATRIX Magazine: How did the pandemic impact your art practice?

La Candelaria: I learned to enjoy being on my own and with myself; just being in my head all the time. I love smoking a nice blunt and just sitting and feeling sad. It sounds depressing, I know. I love to sit and listen to music. It’s like I can see it. I don’t know how but it’s like I can feel the pain in some songs. I love to listen and try to make what I see into something real, to find the glamour in mental health issues.

CXM: Martha Wilson once said: “All performance art is dealing with trauma?” What’s your take on it?

LC: Art communicates what is inside of you, your mind, your heart, your soul. Sometimes when you have all those voices in your head, that’s when the beautiful mess starts. Art is a way you can make everyone feel how you feel! And when you use personal traumas or insecurities, or your demons in your art, you connect easier, you make it more real. The goal for me is to allow people to connect with the emotion because that is when you create an unforgettable experience!!!

CXM: Thank you La Candelaria, looking forward to seeing your work!
