CREATRIX: What made you become a collage artist?
Gem Rosenberg: I’m inspired to collage because I need access to a medium that is affordable. By making due with what’s available, I also reuse materials that might otherwise be considered trash or recycling. It’s both an accessible and an ecological artform.  I’ve always loved collage aesthetically for it’s surreal qualities and interesting juxtapositions of disparate parts. I’m so intrigued by how, unlike a blank canvas, the material for the medium is already imbued with so much history and meaning. It makes for work that can be really layered, conceptually and materially.

CRX: Tell us about your upcoming workshop?
GR: My upcoming workshop is being offered in collaboration with Plaster Cocktail zine to celebrate the release of their most recent volume on the topic of Revolution.  As a contributor to the zine, I’m hosting a 2 1/2 hour collage workshop Sunday 12/6/20 at 6pm EST. We will explore the history of collage, centering artists of color and women artists, some collage techniques, principles of design and a therapeutic collage exercise. It’s going to be very informative and a lot of fun!
