Solar Eclipse & New Moon in Sagittarius
the Moon & the Sun at 12°21′ Sagittarius
December 4th 2021, 2:42 AM EST
A Solar Eclipse can only occur on the New Moon (Sun Moon conjunction), when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth. If the Moon’s shadow falls upon Earth’s surface at that time, part or all of the Sun’s disc is covered or ‘eclipsed’ by the Moon. On December 4th we experience the Total Solar Eclipse: the Sun is shadowed by the Moon, making us highly sensitive. The Sun represents our ego and self esteem, the Moon, and our emotional realm, with the South Node in Sagittarius the emphasis is on overcoming the past limitations and revising the narratives that play in our heads.
In western astrology, the Nodes are considered to be points of evolution. The South Node is where we are comfortable because it is where our past life has been and thus we stay at that comfort level. The North Node by contrast, is the place we are compelled to move towards in order to evolve and be the best incarnation of ourselves we can be. Ultimately we must balance the two points, that is, the signs and houses.
All eclipses involve growth that shows us something about ourselves we may not be aware of such as how we nurture ourselves, and how we respond to our own needs. It also calls into question the extent to which we live the lives that are in accordance with our ideals.
The Nodes are called shadow planets since they are always lurking in the background, and when an eclipse occurs, suddenly things that were hidden come out into the open. In keeping with that symbolism, during eclipse season secrets frequently come to light, and things get revealed, forcing us to deal with and transform them, or be destroyed—literally sink or swim. In addition to the Nodes connecting with Sun and Moon to form an eclipse, planets conjoining eclipses amplify the intensity of the eclipse as well as the house that the Eclipse falls in.
Jupiter is the ruler of this Solar Eclipse so look for guidance within the Jupiter sign of your own chart. The house and sign will give you the clues for how you express your views. This is the time to widen your horizons through philosophical conversations and new adventures.
This New Moon brings a lot of Martian activity. Mars at 23 degrees of Scorpio squares Jupiter at 25 degrees of Aquarius, trines Neptune in Pisces and conjuncts the South Node at 1 degree of Sagittarius – the call is to revise the combative tendency of the inner warrior archetype and strive for peaceful resolutions. What comes to mind is the concept introduced by Mahatma Gandhi satyagraha which translates from Sanskrit and Hindi as “holding onto truth” or “truth power” and signifies the nonviolent resistance to injustice. By refusing to submit to the wrong or to cooperate with it in any way, we assert that truth.
Since the eclipse brings us face-to-face with our shadow side, we are likely to experience it in the area of relationships as Venus at 22 degrees of Capricorn conjuncts Pluto at 25 of Capricorn bringing intensity and the need to create a more fulfilling love arrangement. Also Chiron supports us on the healing journey in search of the truth and fulfillment as it trines the New Moon. We are encouraged to release the self imposed limitations and to heal the areas of life which have been the most troublesome.
If you have a planet or a point in your chart placed between 7º and 17º of the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces) you will experience this eclipse in full force!
NEOVEDIC APPROACH
Jyestha Nakshatra / Scorpio
This Solar Eclipse is taking place in the Jyestha Nakshatra, Sanskrit: the oldest, which translates as the “chief” star. The Goddess Jyestha, Goddess of Misfortune, was one of the fourteen Ratnas (gems) that emerged from the Churning of the Ocean in the story of Samudra manthan related in the text: THE STORY OF A WOMAN AND THE SNAKE. THE ORIGINS OF THE ECLIPSES. She is also the oldest, “eldest” of the Nakshatras, as well as the older sister of Lakshmi. Jyestha also means the “eldest” queen of the Moon God, Soma whose affections turned to his youngest wives. Jyestha being directly opposed by Nakshatra Rohini, Moon’s favourite wife.
Sun, Moon, and Mercury are presently all in Jyeshta Nakshatra (the Chief Star) with Ketu in Anuradha Nakshatra (the Star of Success and….friendship). The ruling planet of Jyeshta, Mercury brings mental brilliance and a strike of creative genius! As this Nakshatra is known to produce immense talent of the most refined type, enough to mention Einstein, Mozart and Beethoven who all had their natal Moons in Jyeshta.
The deity is Indra, King of the Gods, and the divine dragon slayer, known for his courage, and power. The primary motivation of Jyeshta is artha, material prosperity.
This Nakshatra makes us feel that we are in a position of authority, it bestows determination and stamina to rise to the top. It can bring fame and privilege but also ruthlessness – be aware! With the solar eclipse taking place in Jyeshta it is advised to use the power and courage for the right reasons and to support worthy causes. The actions you take during this eclipse really matter – let them be for healing and mending.
