This year’s Frieze art fair brings together over 280 galleries from 42 countries across two sites, Frieze London focusing on contemporary art and Frieze Masters, which includes art from antiquity through the twentieth century.
Frieze started in the 1990s as a London-based art magazine chronicling the Young British Artists who were making conceptual, shocking and challenging work that pushed the boundaries of what was considered art. Painting was out of fashion at the time and the international art market attracted only a fraction of the money it does now. This year many of the YBAs have works at the fair, including Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst. But this time around they’re showing paintings, which is by far the dominant medium across the shows.
Frieze Masters also features a curated section featuring female artists of the twentieth century, a group I’ve been thinking a lot about recently as I prepare for an installation of my paintings, performance and video works in Venice based on the story of Tintoretto’s Daughter, who represents for me the forgotten and intentionally obscured histories of women artists and their contributions.
This is my list of the top 10 contemporary female artists at Frieze. I’ve only included artists who have Instagram accounts so you can follow their work.
