Our guest artist on Creatrix Pod this week is the groundbreaking Sarah Friend whose main area of focus is software and technology.
Originally from Canada and currently based in Berlin, Sarah graduated with a BA in painting before teaching herself to be a software developer in her early 20s. She worked in the tech industry until 2021, and made small video games in her free time, a practice which eventually brought her back to art-making. She is known for her NFT work Lifeforms – NFTs that die if they are not given away.
She talks with our resident interviewer Habib William Kherbek about scarcity, alternative economics, and the data centre as a culty, magical, sacred, ritualistic, witchy space and about new faith-based fantasies from Silicon Valley.
Sarah is interested in the shape of the Internet, how it is planetary in scale and how it is already the largest sculpture anyone has ever made.
Sarah Friend was professor of blockchain art at the Cooper Union in 2022 and has exhibited at and worked with MOMA (NYC), Centre Pompidou (Metz), Kunsthaus Zürich, HEK (Basel), Haus der Kunst (Munich), ArtScience Museum (Singapore), bitforms (NYC), Albright Knox Museum (Buffalo), Rhizome (NYC) and KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin) among others.
We are really happy and excited to be presenting Sarah Friend on this show.
