Bound: The Making of a Photobook Opens at CPW, Celebrating the Photobook as an Artistic Medium

The Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW) opens Bound: The Making of a Photobook on July 11, bringing together a diverse selection of photobooks created through CPW’s workshops and the Bard College Photography Program. On view through August 9, 2026, the exhibition celebrates the photobook not simply as a vehicle for presenting photographs, but as an artistic form in its own right.

Featuring works developed in classes led by Adrianna Ault, Raymond Meeks, and 1080PRESS, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the collaborative and experimental process of transforming a photographic project into a physical object. Through editing, sequencing, design, and production, each book demonstrates how narrative can emerge through the rhythm of turning pages as much as through individual images.

Over the past two decades, the photobook has become one of the most dynamic spaces within contemporary photography. Freed from the conventions of the gallery wall, artists increasingly use books to construct immersive visual narratives, combining photography with text, drawing, archival materials, and experimental design. Independent publishers and artist-run presses have further expanded the medium, making photobook culture one of the most vibrant areas of photographic practice today.

Bound reflects this evolution. Rather than presenting finished photographs as isolated works, the exhibition reveals the creative decisions that shape a book’s structure, pacing, and material presence. The result is an exhibition that highlights bookmaking as both a technical craft and a conceptual practice.

The exhibition also underscores CPW’s longstanding commitment to photographic education and publishing. Through workshops, mentorship, and collaborations with artists and designers, the organization continues to foster new approaches to photographic storytelling while supporting emerging voices in the field.

Bound: The Making of a Photobook is on view at the Center for Photography at Woodstock, 25 Dederick Street, Kingston, New York, from July 11 through August 9, 2026. The opening reception takes place Saturday, July 11, from 3–5 pm. Artists featured include participants from CPW workshops and the Bard College Photography Program, showcasing the breadth of contemporary photobook practice emerging from the Hudson Valley and beyond.
