Aldebaran, also known as Alpha Tauri, is a prominent fixed star located in the constellation Taurus, marking the fiery red eye of the celestial Bull. Although astronomically it resides within the boundaries of Taurus, its tropical zodiac position—due to the gradual shift caused by the precession of the equinoxes—is now around 9° to 10° Gemini. This shift illustrates the difference between sidereal and tropical systems of astrology, where constellational placements and zodiacal degrees slowly diverge over time.

In ancient star lore, Aldebaran was one of the Four Royal Stars of Persia, and is often referred to as the Watcher of the East. This title reflects its historical role in the seasonal sky—particularly its heliacal rising near the Spring Equinox during the time when these star-based systems were first developed (approximately 3000–2000 BCE). Its eastern position marked the dawn of a new agricultural and astrological cycle, symbolizing illumination, initiation, and cosmic guardianship.
Aldebaran is also closely associated with the Pleiades star cluster, which lies nearby in the sky. The name Aldebaran, pronounced /ælˈdɛbərən/, comes from the Arabic al-dabarān, meaning “the follower.” It was so named because the star appears to follow the Pleiades cluster (Messier 45) as they move across the night sky, tracing a celestial path once watched by shepherds, stargazers, and seers alike. Though not part of the Pleiades themselves, Aldebaran has been mythologically regarded as their Watcher or Guardian. Inside the Paleolithic caves early humans painted visions not only of earthly life, but of the heavens above. At Lascaux, in southern France, among over 600 paintings and 1,500 engravings, a handful of non-figurative markings stand out: simple dots and dashes, carefully arranged, suggesting a deeper symbolic or astronomical meaning.
Researchers now suggest that these markings may be stellar cartographies, early star maps encoded in ochre and shadow. Caves themselves, some propose, were chosen not merely for their shelter, but for their astronomical alignments, aligned with cycles far beyond the terrestrial.
One of Lascaux’s most iconic images, the Great Bull (likely an aurochs), bears this celestial memory upon its body.
