Spread Art Artist In Residence Program
Spread Art’s Detroit-based Artist Residency Program invites local, regional, national and international artists to develop and present work in collaboration with the creative communities of Detroit. Below is a general overview of the program (all residencies are ultimately tailored to the individual artist’s needs and interests) and a list of 2016 artists in residence (view 2012-2015 resident artists here).
Spread Art residencies provide housing (if needed), rehearsal and/or studio space, event and/or exhibition opportunities, and introductions to Detroit artists, venues, and more through residency dinners /brunches and additional social and networking opportunities. Artists in residence stay at the three bedroom residency apartment on Rosa Parks Blvd in the Woodbridge neighborhood. Rehearsal and studio space are generally provided at the Rosa Parks facility with a 900 square foot performance space, 5 artist studios, a 16 foot x 16 foot outdoor stage, 700 square foot gallery, community gardens, 200 square foot outdoor projection area, and more. Spread Art works with each artist in advance to determine what event/exhibition support is needed and can be provided. Spread Art provides at least six fully subsidized (no cost to artists) residencies each year. In 2016 – 2017, four of these fully subsidized residencies are available to visual artists and literary arts who have a dependent under the age of 18 (made possible by grant funding from the Sustainable Arts Foundation). Additional residencies are 75% subsidized, with artists paying a portion of costs through an administrative fee of $200/week or $550/month. Spread Art is a member of the worldwide network of artist residencies, Res Artis.
Spread Art is currently accepting proposals from:
1) Local, regional, national and international artists across all disciplines interested in residencies to take place between February 2017 and September 2017. Proposals are accepted and reviewed on an ongoing basis and are submitted online.
Due to the number of applications and the size of the staff, Spread Art is not able to personally contact every artist that applies. Artists are usually contacted within 30 days of their application if selected for a residency.
