11 Newel is pleased to present a survey exhibition of sculptures by artist Tatyana Murray in its main gallery space and new performative video art NFT series by David Henry Nodbody Jr. shown in exclusivity in its project room. The concord exhibitions will be opening on Friday November 19th, 2021.

Bringing together two mid-career artists to the creative facilities of 11 Newel Gallery, curator Coco Dolle invites the public to reflect on sculptural and performative practices by two unique and established self-taught artists Tatyana Murray and David Henry Nobody Jr.. Largely using re-appropriated materials, both the works of Tatyana and David revolve between notions of chaos, illusions and conceptualism. Based in New York for decades and although from different backgrounds, each of these artists playfully engages with hyper light and monochromatic tones confronting the general malaise of our post-traumatic pandemic world. The excessive layering in their respective bodies of work questions our relationship with our insatiable needs to over consume while reflecting upon our existential state in both the physical and digital spaces. Together the two exhibitions present a choreography of human qualities and flaws.

Effervescent Reflections

Sculpture works by Tatyana Murray

Effervescent Reflections is a survey exhibition of sculptural works by Tatyana Murray expanding on her body of work created over the last twenty years.

British artist Tatyana Murray has been based in New York since the mid-1990s. Largely self-taught artist, Tatyana found personal meaning in sculptures through the abstractions of nature and the cosmos. While her approach to the medium is poetic, she uses tools and materials that convey intense hard work. She stitches, pins, drills, hits, weaves, cuts and scratches to create illusions of depth and layering, bringing light into her entire body of work. Finding beauty between chaos and softness, her sculptural works bring textures and movement in a refined balance. Through a meditative process, Tatyana repeats pattern making in geometric and circular shapes, exploring her universes in which forms continuously collapse and rearrange themselves. Her “Cloud”, “Nebula” and “Candy Flowers” engage with ovular forms and a dreamlike intensity. The velvety covers adding to a sense of whimsical mystery. Her cosmic works such as ‘Uranium’ and ‘Flame at Night’ use rubber, plexi and metal to create a visual tension between universal harmony and chaos. In her survey exhibition ‘Effervescent Reflection’, Tatyana enforces her solid presence in the art world, largely appreciated by an audience of international collectors. The artist, who renowned NY Times art critic Roberta Smith once called a ‘promising hand’ is now established in her field.

Project Room:

Liquid Cacophony

Video art NFTs by David Henry Nobody Jr.

Liquid Cacophony by David Henry Nobody Jr. takes over our project room with an exclusive installation of video art created for the exhibition which will also be dropped as NFTs on Foundation as part of their Collections series. For 11 Newel Gallery, David has created a series of short videos of monochromatic paint splashes and sounds. Using himself as canvas, this new series of videos stem from David’s complex relationship with the body and the internet. This series shows buckets of colored paint thrown at the artist’s multiple personas resembling an apocalyptic meltdown. Strongly referencing the early performative actionism of Yves Klein and Paul McCarthy, the ensemble of the videos address new transformations happening in web 3. A self-taught artist based in New York, David has navigated the art world both established and underground over the last three decades. He is renowned for his provocative, transgressive and unique style of performance art. In the last five years, he has broken into the digital spheres garnering an instagram following of over 100K. Further exploring the emerging medium of NFT, David’s work is now boundary breaking in the genre. Liquid Cacophony is a commentary on the state of the world and the recent viral chaos stirred by the NFT and crypto revolution.
